Ian Mitchell was a member of the Red River Nordic Race Team as well as an accomplished biathlete. He graduated in late June and trained throughout the whole summer.
In early July, Ian and his family spent some time in Canmore for a four day training session with Rachel Koroscil. They rollerskied, ran, shot and even went up to Mount Shark. The following week, Ian was in Camrose, the home of the Augustana Vikings. Ian assisted Lowell Niven, head coach, in coaching some younger athletes.
On Friday, August 25th Ian headed back up to Camrose for the University of Alberta Augustana campus. Ian is in first year general studies and is a member of the school’s biathlon team. He is living in residence and is taking a full course load. At the moment Ian is training 3 to 4 days a week by running, rollerskiing and shooting on metal. The training will increase to 6 times a week as the season progresses and Ian is loving it! His parents speak to him weekly and Ian fills them in on the Nerf Wars between the co-residence kids along with the trips he makes. He has already raced in Canmore (roller ski biathlon race) and coached in Prince Albert National Park. There are plans for the biathlon team to compete in biathlon and nordic races in Canmore, Camrose, Hinton, Red Deer and possibly Whistler.
